Shaping the Netherlandish Canon: Karel Van Mander's Schilder-Boeck by Walter S. Melion,

Shaping the Netherlandish Canon: Karel Van Mander's Schilder-Boeck by Walter S. Melion,
First published in 1604, Karel van Mander's definitive treatment of Dutch art has long been recognized for its critical morison van and historical influence - morison van and yet, until now, no comprehensive account of the book's conception, aims, morison van and impact has been available. Here, analyzing in depth both the content morison van and context of Van Mander's Schilder-Boeck (or Book on Picturing), Walter S. Melion reveals its central importance to an understanding of northern Renaissance morison van and Baroque art. Melion considers the paintings morison van and drawings of the Flemish artist morison van and humanist, showing how they engage the concerns of the Schilder-Boeck. He argues that Van Mander painted the kinds of subject - landscape, still-life, history - sanctioned by his text, implementing pictorial practices he endorsed. Chief among Van Mander's concerns was the establishment of a canon of early Netherlandish masters. Melion shows how he pursued this goal by first dismantling Vasari's claims for the supremacy of Tuscan vernacular painting morison van and diction morison van and then drawing on the humanist discourse of Ortelius morison van and his circle to define regional pictorial idioms. By interpreting the terminology employed in the Schilder-Boeck, Melion clarifies the text's relationship to past morison van and contemporary art theory. Van Mander is seen here developing his critical categories morison van and then applying them to Ancient, Italian, morison van and Netherlandish artists in order to mark changes within a culture morison van and to characterize excellence for each region. Thus Melion demonstrates how Van Mander revised both the structure morison van and critical language of Vasari's Lives to clarify northern artistic traditions morison van and the concerns of Netherlandish artists. A much needed corrective to the view that Dutchart of the period was lacking in theory, Melion's work offers a compelling account of a sixteenth- morison van and seventeenth-century theoretical morison van and critical perspective morison van and shows how this perspective suggests a rereading of northern art.

The Tarnished Cavalier: Major General Earl Van Dorn, C.S.A. by Arthur B. Carter,

The Tarnished Cavalier: Major General Earl Van Dorn, C.S.A. by Arthur B. Carter,
Dashing, bold, morison van and fearless in command, Major General Earl Van Dorn was a soldier whose star shone brightly during the early days of the Confederacy. A veteran of the Mexican War morison van and Indian campaigns, he is remembered for suffering devastating defeats while leading armies at Pea Ridge morison van and Corinth morison van and then redeeming himself as a cavalry commander at Holly Springs morison van and Thompson Station. Yet he was perhaps best known for his reputation as a womanizer killed by an irate husband at the height of his career. Arthur B. Carter's biography of Van Dom, the first in three decades, draws on previously unpublished sources regarding the general's affair with Martha Goodbread -- which resulted in three children -- morison van and his liaison with Jessica Peters, which resulted in his death. This new material, unknown to previous biographers, includes the revelation that the true circumstances of Van Dorn's death were kept secret by friends morison van and comrades in order to protect his family. Carter reveals that the general was probably mortally wounded on the Peters plantation but was carried back to his Spring Hill headquarters. He reconstructs the details of Van Dorn's murder in a brisk narrative that draws on accounts of Van Dorn's confidantes, capturing both the danger morison van and passion of those events. The Tarnished Cavalier is more than a story of scandal. Carter sheds new light on Confederate conduct of the war in the western theater during 1861 morison van and 1862, revisits the pivotal battles of Pea Ridge morison van and Corinth -- both of which are important to understanding the loss of the upper South -- morison van and introduces new perspectives on the defense of Vicksburg morison van and the Middle Tennessee operations of early 1863. Carter's narrativejuxtaposes Van Dorn's flamboyance with his failings as a commander: although he was a soldier with heroic aspirations, he was also impulsive, reckless, morison van and unable to delegate authority.
